SpaceX to launch Air Force’s secretive X-37B spaceplane

Elon Musk’s SpaceX will undertake its first mission with the U.S. Air Force later this summer when it launches the secretive X-37B military spaceplane on a Falcon 9 rocket.

Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson announced the launch Tuesday during a hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, saying “SpaceX will be sending the next Air Force payload up into space in August.” She later confirmed a SpaceX rocket would be carrying the reusable space drone.

The United Launch Alliance, a joint effort owned by Boeing Co. BA, -1.16% and Lockheed Martin Corp. LMT, -1.16% , launched the four previous X-37B missions.
