The Wall Street Journal: Uber CEO Travis Kalanick to take a leave of absence

Uber Technologies Inc. Chief Executive Travis Kalanick will take an indefinite leave of absence from the company and transfer his responsibilities to his direct reports while he is away, a huge shift for the highflying startup amid a sweeping investigation into its workplace culture.

Mr. Kalanick said in an email to all Uber staff Tuesday that he would step aside and would be involved only in major strategic decisions. The leave is necessary, the 40-year-old co-founder of the ride-hailing company said, “to become the leader that this company needs.”

His missive to staff came just as Uber announced partial results of a nearly four-month investigation into its workplace culture by former U.S.
