I hate going to the grocery store even though I love to cook. I hate not finding what I need. I hate waiting 15 minutes for a slow cashier to ring me up. Most of us do.

Here’s hoping Amazon changes all that.

The company’s shock deal to buy Whole Foods promises to do for groceries what Amazon AMZN, +2.44% did for books: Make shopping fast and simple for the widest possible array of goods.

The truth is, the vast technological advances during the internet era have done little to alter how most Americans shop for food.
