Americans are treating their beds like couches — here’s why that’s a problem

Americans are doing many more daily activities from bed these days, and it could be preventing them from catching enough shut-eye.

Two-thirds of Americans watch TV or movies in bed, according to a survey of 1,000 adults by online mattress retailer The Saatva Company. A majority of people are also doing internet-based activities in bed, including surfing the web (60%), checking email (57%) and browsing social media accounts (54%). Comparatively, only 40% of those polled said they read books in bed.

Doing something other than sleeping in bed is also growing in popularity. The bed has supplanted the couch as the preferred spot to watch a TV show or movie for 60% of Americans.
