Move over, London and Paris — these unlikely foreign locales have seen spiking tourism interest this summer

When it comes to planning their vacations this summer, many tourists are showing interest in cities beyond such traditional destinations as London, Rome and Paris, as well as New York, and setting their sights on less frequented locales.

While many of these cities retain their perennial popularity, data from the American Express Travel AXP, -0.04% internal booking database for the summer months, starting in April, show double-digit increases being enjoyed by some relatively under-the-radar destinations. They include the Maldives (up 117% from a year earlier); Bilbao, Spain (up 114%); Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (up 97%); Costa Smeralda on the Italian island of Sardinia (up 90%); the Croatian capital Zagreb (up 89%); Marrakech, Morocco (up 77%); Ixtapa, Mexico (up 69%)’ Mumbai (up 69%); and Glasgow (also up 69%).
