SeaWorld faces federal investigations for ‘Blackfish’ discussions

SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. disclosed late Friday afternoon that it has received subpoenas from the Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission regarding its response to “Blackfish,” a documentary critical of the theme-park company’s treatment of killer whales.

In an SEC filing, the company disclosed that it received a subpoena from the Justice Department in June “concerning disclosures and public statements made by the Company and certain executives and/or individuals on or before August 2014, including those regarding the impact of the ‘Blackfish’ documentary, and trading in the company’s securities.” An SEC subpoena focused on the same issue was received at an unstated date, the filing says.
