The Margin: Elon Musk wants to whisk you from O’Hare to downtown Chicago at 125 mph

Chicago Transit Authority trains, including those to O’Hare and Midway airports, typically have maximal speeds of 55 mph.

Elon Musk of Tesla TSLA, -1.55% and SpaceX — and soon, if things go to plan, Boring Co. — fame has an idea for moving travelers between downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport at 125 miles per hour, and a Chicago City Hall official thinks he’d be willing to self-fund it, according to columnist Greg Hinz of Crain’s Chicago Business.

Musk, according to a Hinz column published late Monday, learned of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s abiding desire to speed an 18-mile journey that can take 45 minutes via the existing CTA mass-transit train line and often even longer by taxi or private automobile and pitched him on the idea.
