HP Inc.’s most profitable business has been on the decline for years. That may be about to change.

Printing was the bread and butter of the old Hewlett-Packard Co., but consumers and businesses are printing less in an era filled with mobile devices. While continuing to deliver the majority of profits for the consumer focused spinoff HP HPQ, -0.51% printing sales slid each of the last five years and hit the lowest total since at least 1998 last year.

However, HP’s most recent earnings report included a surprise: The first year-over-year gain for both printing and PC sales in the same quarter since 2010.
