37-year-old Venus Williams is two matches from winning Wimbledon

When Venus Williams won her first Wimbledon in 2000, the woman she beat on Tuesday to make the 2017 Wimbledon semifinals was only 3 years old.

The 37-year-old Williams defeated 20-year-old Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-3, 7-5, and is now two wins from winning Wimbledon for the sixth time — and first since 2008.

Despite Ostapenko winning the French Open last month, most Grand Slams over the past decade have been won by players closer to 30 than 20.

The reasons for tennis’s increasingly older champions have been summed up well by Sports Illustrated’s Jon Wertheim: The game is more physically demanding now, so older and more physically mature players are doing better.
