FBI director nominee Christopher Wray testifies during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

Christopher Wray, President Donald Trump’s pick to be the next FBI director, pledged Wednesday to be an independent leader who would never let politics interfere with the bureau’s investigations.

“I believe to my core that there’s only one right way to do this job, and that is with strict independence, by the book, playing it straight,” Wray told the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is considering his nomination.

Wray, flanked by his wife and children, weighed in on contentious topics from torture to accusations of collusion between Trump’s campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 election.
