Capitol Report: Opioid abuse dominates Washington, from Senate health bill to Yellen hearing

If there is any doubt that the opioid crisis has captured the attention of Washington, Thursday should put that to rest, as the damage caused was the center of discussions on everything from the healthcare bill being debated in the Senate to the testimony of Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen.

That the U.S., unusually among developed nations, is so addicted to painkillers at this point isn’t in dispute.

The Senate’s latest version of the healthcare bill will include $45 billion to combat opioid abuse, an attempt to win over the votes of Republicans Rob Portman of Ohio and Shelly Moore Capito of West Virginia.
