The Wall Street Journal: Lyft says it will build its own driverless car technology

While Uber Technologies Inc. has embarked on a costly mission to develop self-driving vehicles, rival Lyft Inc. set a different course, relying on a partnerships for what many believe is the future of urban transportation.

Now Lyft is shifting gears at a vulnerable time for Uber.

The San Francisco company on Friday said it is forming its own autonomous-car development division, hiring hundreds of engineers for it and opening a new office in the heart of Silicon Valley. Lyft said it would be developing its own software and hardware to enable vehicles to drive without a human at the wheel, while also working to attract new partners who can plug their own self-driving cars into its grid.
