You’ll save money on gas with a Tesla, but you may end up paying more elsewhere

Even with gas prices hitting record lows, it’s still cheaper to power up the all-electric Tesla than to take a traditional car to the gas station. But there are other expenses to consider when you own a Tesla. TSLA TSLA, -0.46%

With Tesla rolling out its new “affordable” $35,000 Model 3, more drivers than ever are considering buying one of the eco-friendly luxury vehicles. Before the Model 3, its lowest-priced model went for $88,500.

Tesla said in 2016 that 373,000 people had put down $1,000 deposits to join the waiting list for a Model 3. The company hasn’t updated the tally since then, but CEO Elon Musk said last month “there are more and more every week” and that people who order the cars now probably won’t get them until 2018.
