Move over, breathalyzers; ‘textalyzers’ could be used on drivers’ phones

New York state drivers may soon have to take a “textalyzer.”

The state’s Democratic governor, Andrew Cuomo, reportedly told the Associated Press Wednesday that the state is testing technology that will allow police to identify drivers who are texting and driving. “This review will examine the effectiveness of using this new emerging technology to crack down on this reckless behavior and thoroughly evaluate its implications,” he said in a statement to the AP.

The technology is being developed by Cellebrite, an Israeli-based technology company. It isn’t clear how it would analyze the phone usage. (The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
