FA Center: This type of investing could save the world — just don’t expect outperformance, too

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (MarketWatch)—There are many reasons to take environmental, social and governance factors into account when choosing investments. Outperforming the market isn’t one of them.

That’s not a criticism. I’m a believer in taking into account these factors, known colloquially as “ESG,” and have invested my IRA in two equity mutual funds that pursue the approach. But I also know that if the approach consistently beat the market, then the rest of Wall Street would have long since started taking it into account when devising investment strategies.

ESG investing nevertheless makes up a huge chunk of the money that’s at work today.
