‘Dark Tower’ opens at No. 1 on slow week at the box office

The movie adaptation of Stephen King’s epic, “The Dark Tower,” pushed “Dunkirk” from the top spot at the weekend box office, but it had little to brag about. The weekend was the slowest since April in terms of overall ticket sales, and the $19.5 million made by “The Dark Tower” was the lowest No. 1 opening yet this year.

The relatively weak showing by the sprawling sci-fi Western fantasy, starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, may scuttle hopes of turning it into a franchise for Sony Corp.’s SNE, +0.35% Sony Pictures, which partnered with Media Rights Capital to produce the $60 million film.
