Economic Preview: American workers are missing out on a big payday, and here’s the main reason why

American workers still aren’t getting big pay raises even though the economy has been growing for more than eight years.

Low unemployment, near-record job openings and a flush of new hiring haven’t delivered bigger paychecks for American workers. But there’s one thing that could.

Higher productivity. Or in plain English: employees making more goods and services in the same amount of time.

When workers do more each hour, companies can sell more stuff. Rising sales, in turn, lead to greater profits. And that means firms can give workers higher pay since they are more valuable.

The problem is, productivity has been feeble for quite some time.
