Economic Report: There’s good and bad news as job openings hit record in July

The number of job openings rose to a fresh record in June while hiring decreased, evidence of the difficulties companies are having finding suitable employees.

The Labor Department reported on Tuesday that openings vaulted to 6.16 million from 5.7 million in May.

Big gains came in professional and business services, health care and social assistance and construction.

Hirings, however, fell, and separations also fell slightly.

Companies in both surveys and reports like the JOLTS say they’re having trouble finding employees with enough skills. A separate report from the National Federation of Independent Business also reported growing job openings.
