Caroline Baum: Can we get through the debt-limit showdown without talking about default?

The U.S. Congress failed to repeal and replace Obamacare on Day 1 — or on Day 100 or 200, for that matter. The lofty goal of tax reform will likely be downsized to modest tax cuts and tweaks to the tax code. Infrastructure investment had its day, or week, in the sun without yielding any concrete proposals for improving the nation’s roads, rails and bridges.

Now come some real deadlines, not abstract promises by lawmakers and President Donald Trump. Congress must fund the government (pass a budget) and raise the debt ceiling by the end of the fiscal year on Sept.
