More Americans donate to civil rights causes following Charlottesville violence

When Emily Amick, a 27-year-old makeup artist based in New York City first saw reports of white nationalists marching at the University of Virginia on Friday night, she brushed it off as just another example of ongoing political unrest in the U.S. in recent months. But as the turmoil continued into Saturday and one man rammed his car into counter protesters, killing a 32-year-old woman, she felt compelled to take action — this time, in the form of a donation to the Charlottesville chapter of the NAACP.

“As a person of color, unveiled, proud, white supremacy is a personal attack,” said Amick, who is mixed race.
