Trump steps up fight against Taliban, declares end to nation-building

Calling terrorists “losers,” President Donald Trump announced Monday night a plan to step up the fight against extremists and Taliban forces in Afghanistan, and said the U.S. was ending the policy of nation-building.

Trump also said the U.S. would pressure neighboring Pakistan to step up its fight against extremism in a speech Monday night from Fort Myer in Arlington, Va., his first nationally televised prime-time speech since he addressed Congress in January.

While early reports said Trump was expected to announce the deployment of up to 4,000 additional troops, in his speech Trump explicitly avoided a number. “I’ve said many times how counterproductive it is for the United States to announce in advance the dates we intend to begin, or end, military operations.
