5 ways to live in a foreign country for free

For many Americans, traveling the world seems unattainable.

Studies show intangible experiences like travel lead to more happiness than physical goods like jewelry, clothes and electronics, but Americans still don’t prioritize it. Some 29% of U.S. citizens have never been abroad and 34% didn’t take a single vacation day in 2016.

The biggest reason people cite for not traveling? Lack of funds. Nearly three-fourths, or 71%, of people, say they can’t afford to leave the country. However, the price of lodging, one of the biggest costs involved with traveling, can actually be eliminated in many cases. From volunteering to tutoring and pet sitting, there are a number of ways to traverse the globe without paying for a room.
