Deep Dive: Here’s a way to make more money with your dividend stocks

If you invest in dividend stocks, selling covered-call options can increase your income while offering some protection from price declines.

Ken Roberts, an investment adviser with IWC Asset Management in Carmel, Calif., uses covered-call strategies with his income-seeking clients, and has provided examples of stocks for which he thinks the strategy is appropriate.

Income-seeking investors still need to consider stocks for income, as long-term interest rates remain low. Ten-year U.S. Treasury notes yield about 2.21%. That’s up from 1.56% a year ago, but it’s still only slightly above the 2% dividend yield for the S&P 500 Index SPX, +0.17%
