Key Words: ‘Gone with the Wind’ screening canceled in Memphis amid online backlash

“As an organization whose stated mission is to ‘entertain, educate and enlighten the communities it serves,’ the Orpheum cannot show a film that is insensitive to a large segment of its local population.”

Brett Batterson

That’s the Orpheum Theatre Group’s president explaining why “Gone with the Wind” won’t be shown during next year’s “Summer Movie Series” in downtown Memphis.

The classic 1939 Technicolor film has long been a staple of the city’s summer screenings, but after it showed on Aug. 11, Batterson said there’d been a change of heart due to feedback from attendees.

He explained in an interview with USA Today the decision was made “before Charlottesville” and the heated debate over Confederate statues.
