Market Snapshot: Stocks flat as geopolitical tension offsets strong economic data

U.S. stocks struggled for direction on Wednesday, trading near break-even levels amid signs of ongoing tension between the U.S. and North Korea, which offset a batch of upbeat economic reports.

The data was in particular view with a key jobs report due Friday and the Labor Day holiday set to begin.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.05% slipped 2 points to 21,866 while the S&P 500 SPX, +0.18% was up by about a point at 2,447. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +0.54% however, was 20 points higher at 6,308, a rise of 0.3%.

The S&P 500 has risen for three straight sessions, cutting its August losses to 1%.
