Capitol Report: From debt ceiling to flood insurance, these are the big deadlines Congress is facing

Heading off a government shutdown on Sept. 30 is one of the biggest items on lawmakers’ to-do list when they return Sept. 5.

Washington lawmakers will grapple with a crunch of fiscal deadlines when they return from their August break next week — with Hurricane Harvey relief also increasingly likely to be on the short-term agenda.

When Congress returns Sept. 5, lawmakers will plunge into debates over funding the government past Sept. 30; raising the debt limit; reauthorizing the National Flood Insurance Program; and renewing funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Harvey relief may either ease or complicate passage of one or more of these items.
