Jeff Reeves’s Strength in Numbers: 5 solid stocks for a rocky September

Seasonality in the stock market is not a sure-fire thing. From the January effect to “sell in May and go away” to the Santa Claus rally, there are plenty of calendar-driven strategies that been proven wrong in very profound ways.

Lately, the notion that September is the worst month for stocks has been making the rounds. I guess people forget that in 2016, the S&P 500 SPX, +0.31% was off a measly 3 points on the month — literally a rounding error and a ghost of the 7% drop in January of last year.

There are obviously no sure things in the stock market, and it’s a fool’s errand to think one simple trick of market timing will deliver you a fortune or save you from failure.
