Key Words: Bannon: Catholic position on DACA is about filling the pews

In a “60 Minutes” interview to be aired this weekend, Steve Bannon of Breitbart News, the former chief strategist to President Trump, meandered onto some thorny theological ground, saying he, as a Catholic, “totally” respects the pope and the cardinals on matters of religious doctrine but, on matters concerning a sovereign state’s public policy (toward, say, undocumented immigrants), less so. Then, he told CBS News’s Charlie Rose, “they’re just another guy with an opinion.”

It was, of course, an opinion of Bannon’s about Catholic leaders’ stances on DACA — Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals, which Attorney General Jeff Sessions “rescinded” this week — that captured a lion’s share of attention in the wake of the “60 Minutes” sit-down:
