A magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mexico early Friday — raising fears of a tsunami and causing at least two dozen deaths, according to reports.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the powerful temblor struck 20 miles under the Pacific near Mexico’s border with Guatemala at 11:49 p.m. Thursday local time. It is believed to be the biggest quake for the country in a century, according to Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

The governor of the southern state of Oaxaca said on Friday that 20 people were killed in that region, Reuters reported.
