Warren bill would ban employers from requiring credit checks from job applicants

Employers shouldn’t force job-seekers to provide a copy of their credit report as part of their application process, Sen. Elizabeth Warren said Thursday — especially in light of Equifax Inc.’s massive data breach.

The Massachusetts Democrat reintroduced a bill Thursday seeking to prohibit the common practice, saying credit reports are unnecessary for jobs and often wrong.

A 2012 FTC study found that errors are common in credit reports and fixing them is difficult, and in a statement, Warren said the Equifax hack is likely to make those problems worse, potentially compromising millions of Americans’ credit.

“This bill is about basic fairness — let people compete on the merits, not on whether they already have enough money to pay all their bills.
