How Adam Sandler convinced Netflix to spend $12.5 million on indie film ‘Mudbound’

Netflix, NFLX, -0.15% the entertainment streaming company, continues its transformation into a fully-fledged studio with the release of its upcoming drama “Mudbound.”

Jason Clarke, Carey Milligan, Garrett Hedlund and singer Mary J. Blige star in director Dee Rees’s movie about racial tensions in the Deep South in the aftermath of WWII, which just had a gala screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Producer Cassian Elwes revealed that the movie did not have a distribution deal after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January until Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos watched the movie in his condo with comedy star Adam Sandler.
