How ‘Tomb Raider’ inspired Angelina Jolie’s unflinching new Cambodian film

Angelina Jolie unveiled her latest effort as a director, the Netflix NFLX, -0.15% documentary “First They Killed My Father,” at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Cambodian-set movie also marks the production debut of her 16-year-old son Maddox.

Jolie kept it in the family, minus ex-husband Brad Pitt, bringing her six children to the premiere of the film which is based on author Loung Ung’s experience as a child soldier under the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime that seized control of Cambodia in 1975.

Premiering the film in Toronto, the 42-year-old Oscar-winning actress said her interest in Cambodia dates back to playing Lara Croft.
