Sean Spicer made a surprise Emmys appearance during Stephen Colbert’s monologue

We’ve come to expect flashy musical numbers to kick off awards shows nowadays. Stephen Colbert, host of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and Sunday night’s master of ceremonies put his own spin on an opening number for the 69th annual Emmy Awards on CBS CBS, +0.14% . Colbert, joined by actors Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”) and Allison Janney (“Mom”), didn’t shy away from commenting on climate change, some of the hypocrisy surrounding social protests and the controversy of Time Warner Inc.-owned TWX, +0.85% HBO’s development of the new show “Confederate.” (The host, nominated for an Emmy in the Variety Talk Series category, has had success on his own show tackling politics and some of the tougher topics of the day.
