Facebook plans changes after Russian political ad purchases

Facebook Inc. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg announced broad changes to the company’s political ad policies Thursday, including increased human scrutiny and an effort to give its 2 billion-strong user base more transparency into who is paying for what political advertising.

Zuckerberg’s announcement, made via a Facebook Live video, comes alongside the company’s decision Thursday to release 3,000 Russia-linked ads to congressional committees investigating that country’s meddling during the 2016 presidential election. The company had disclosed on Sept. 6 that Russian agents bought the Facebook ads during the campaign, but had previously shown congressional staffers only samples of the ads and not handed over the entire cache.
