German election: Who’s Merkel up against and what are their chances?

With less than a week until the German vote, Angela Merkel looks like a shoo-in for her fourth term as leader of Europe’s largest country. But who is her Christian Democratic Party up against, and how could their showing end up shaping Germany’s future?

Polls are putting Merkel’s CDU 15 to 20 points in the lead, while bookies point to a more than 90% chance of the 63-year-old leader emerging as victor again on Sept. 24, general election day.

In a dramatic year for European elections — think France, the Netherlands and the U.K. — that lead has led some commentators and analysts to tag the vote as a “boring” non-event, with little prospect of a Brexit-style upset.
