The Wall Street Journal: Netflix is putting down roots in Canada

OTTAWA—Netflix Inc. has committed to spend several hundred million dollars to create a stand-alone studio in Canada that will produce and distribute content.

The move comes as part of the streaming giant’s NFLX, -0.70% efforts to ease tensions with global policy makers concerned about the streaming service’s rapid growth.

Under terms the country’s Heritage Minister, Melanie Joly, unveiled, Netflix will invest a minimum 500 million Canadian dollars ($400.8 million) over the next five years in original Canadian productions for the streaming service’s global platform.

Ms. Joly said Netflix also committed to spend a portion of the money on French-language content, reflecting Canada’s linguistic duality.
