Rex Nutting: Coal’s brief revival happened before Trump took office

No industry gets as much love from President Donald Trump as the coal industry. Throughout his campaign and his presidency, Trump promised that he would revive the coal industry by stopping what he called President Barack Obama’s cruel and cerebral “war on coal.”

The “war on coal” was shorthand for everything conservatives hated about the swamp. It stood for all the overbearing regulations in the name of some abstract, politically correct goals.

Above all, coal meant jobs. Coal had provided one of the few well-paying jobs ($82,000 a year) that a worker with limited skills or education could get.

The revival of American coal would mean that America was indeed great again.
