Chloë Sevigny on how her new Lizzie Borden movie connects to #MeToo

Actress and fashion designer Chloë Sevigny spent over a decade developing and producing a movie based on Lizzie Borden, the Massachusetts Sunday school teacher widely suspected of hacking her father and stepmother to death in 1892.

Yet she did not foresee that “Lizzie,” in which she stars as the title character who was acquitted of the murders despite widespread evidence to the contrary, would prove so timely. The movie, which also stars Kristen Stewart as an Irish maid, revolves around women confronted with an atmosphere of oppression. Sevigny and Stewart’s characters have an illicit romance and they struggle to stand up to Borden’s father Andrew Borden (played by Jamey Sheridan).
