Earnings Watch: Tech’s $500 billion club has tripled, and it dominates the market as earnings storm approaches

As 2017 dawned, two tech companies were worth $500 billion on their own. That number has since tripled, forming a group of half a dozen tech companies worth at least half a trillion dollars that dominate the markets as their products weave their way into every facet of consumers’ lives.

All six companies — Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. BABA, -1.65% , Alphabet Inc. GOOGL, -0.77%GOOG, -1.01% , Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, +1.42% , Apple Inc. AAPL, -0.59% , Facebook Inc. FB, +0.61% and Microsoft Corp. MSFT, -1.26% — will report earnings on Wednesday and Thursday, and their size means the final tabulation of their 2017 performances will have an enormous effect on the market.
