Russia slams new U.S. nuclear weapons stance as ‘confrontational’

Russia has blasted the U.S.’s new nuclear warfare stance as “confrontational”, after the Pentagon warned that it would consider a nuclear retaliation even if it was coming under a nonnuclear attack.

That message, and a confirmation that the U.S. wants to develop smaller “low-yield” nuclear missiles, came in the Nuclear Posture Review, presented by the Pentagon, Energy Department and State Department officials on Friday.

That smaller weapon is seen as a counter to any Russian perception that U.S. nuclear weapons are too huge to be used and therefore no deterrent.

“While just having a flick through the document, one can notice that its confrontational charge and anti-Russian focus stare [you] in the face,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a commentary published Saturday, according to Russian news agency Tass.
