Why sports bars may not see a Super Bowl bump

Historically, the Super Bowl heralds massive crowds to sports bars around the country — but if recent trends prevail, bar owners may lose out.

The New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles are set to battle it out at Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis on Sunday. While fans in those cities are more likely to hit up their local watering holes to celebrate the game (and potentially spread the flu in the process), Americans elsewhere may run errands instead.

Foot traffic to sports bars on Sunday, traditionally the biggest night of the week for National Football League fans, fell significantly between the 2015 and 2016 football seasons, echoing similar declines in TV viewership, according to a report released in August by location-sharing mobile app Foursquare.
