The Margin: Super Bowl commercial blackout: How much did that blank screen cost NBC?

No, that wasn’t just your TV. NBC’s broadcast of the Super Bowl went black during a commercial break Sunday.

The 26 seconds of a dark screen appeared to be a technical malfunction, and may have been costly for Comcast Corp.’s CMCSA, -1.86% NBC — the price for a 30-second Super Bowl ad was reportedly around $5 million.

There was no immediate explanation from NBC for what happened. Eventually the telecast cut back to the broadcast booth in Minneapolis, Minn., and the announcers filled time until play resumed.
