Volatility has returned to equities — and how.

U.S. stocks slumped Thursday, the latest session with a massive swing on the day. The losses were so severe — building on weakness seen throughout the past week — that both the Dow and the S&P 500 entered correction territory, defined as a 10% drop from a recent peak. The Cboe Volatility index VIX, -3.65% spiked more than 20%, bringing its year-to-date advance to a staggering 203%.

Here’s how big the market’s gyrations have been this year: The S&P 500 SPX, -3.75% has moved at least 1% in four of the past five sessions, as have the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -4.15% and the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, -3.90% .
