Horror satire “Get Out” was made for $4.5 million and has grossed $176 million domestically and $255 million worldwide, making it one of the most profitable films of the year. Released last February, the film was long considered a dark horse for awards season.

But for all the love and acclaim the movie has generated, when it came to its prospects of actually winning a Best Picture Oscar, the initial reaction from many would have been, “Get Out of here!” After all, the last Best Picture winner to be released in February, a full year before the Oscars, is also the only horror movie to have won: “The Silence of the Lambs,” back in 1992.
