Paul Brandus: Guns are on the same path to oblivion as cigarettes, soda

Messages, posted on a fence, hang, as students and parents attend a voluntary campus orientation at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, for the coming Wednesday’s reopening, following last week’s mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, U.S., February 25, 2018

You may not think guns, cigarettes and sugar have much in common, but they do: They’re all big killers (guns are the smallest of these), and slowly but surely, Americans have been, at various speeds and in various ways, turning away from them.

I’ll draw some comparisons in a minute, but when it comes to guns, here’s the broad point: For all the anger on the left about Republicans who are in the pocket of the National Rifle Association, there are some things the gun lobby can’t control: namely demographics, changing consumer habits and time.
