Iowa to Trump: Modernize Nafta, please don’t kill it

Not heeding the Trump administration’s call to update a nearly 25-year-old trade pact could hurt America’s farming heartland, with small, but politically influential, Iowa at its center.

But to dismantle the North American Free Trade Agreement, or Nafta, as part of a bigger trade tiff could prove even costlier, or so goes the argument from the export-reliant producers growing corn CK8, -0.76% (including for biofuels and biochemicals), wheat, soybeans and livestock, as well as the manufacturing, logistics and technology industries that power the Midwest economy.

“Few disagree that Nafta has issues and needs to be modernized,” said Debi Durham, director of the Iowa Economic Development Agency, in a recent interview with MarketWatch.
