The Wall Street Journal: Vatican finance chief to be tried in Australia on sex-abuse charges

MELBOURNE, Australia — Cardinal George Pell, one of the Vatican’s most senior officials, will be tried on multiple charges of “historical sexual offenses,” a judge ruled Tuesday.

Cardinal Pell pleaded not guilty to the charges. The offenses are alleged to have occurred decades ago.

The cardinal stepped away from his role as the Vatican’s finance chief last year after police in Victoria state charged the 76-year-old cleric with sexual offenses involving a number of complainants.

A lawyer for the cardinal had urged Magistrate Belinda Wellington to dismiss all charges against his client. On Tuesday, the judge dismissed some of the charges.
