Asia Markets: Surge from Down Under leads Asia-Pacific stock gains

An uncertain start for Asia-Pacific stocks has turned into broad gains in early trading Thursday, with indexes Down Under leading the way. New Zealand’s stock benchmark NZ50GR, +1.04% was up 1.4% to hit fresh record highs while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 XJO, +1.11% was 1.2% higher after notching a 10½-year closing best Wednesday.

Japan’s Nikkei NIK, +0.77% ended morning trading up 0.8% amid yen weakness. Chinese large caps were up similarly, but Korea’s Kospi SEU, -0.58% was barely lower and Southeast Asia was lagging.

After opening with a modest drop, the Nikkei turned higher with the dollar USDJPY, +0.33% adding to session highs, topping ¥110.40.
