HSBC hopes to attract more customers with a robot named Pepper

Would you be more likely to visit your bank branch if a robot were there to greet you?

One bank is betting you would. On Tuesday, HSBC HSBC, -1.96% announced a bold new strategy to attract customers, starting at a branch in New York on Fifth Avenue. A robot named Pepper, from SoftBank Robotics, will be a staff member at the branch full time and approach customers when they walk in the door and ask them if they need help.

Pepper — an approximately four-foot tall human-looking robot, which has previously made an appearance as a waiter at Pizza Hut YUM, -1.42% — will help “increase engagement” at the bank branch, said Pablo Sanchez, HSBC’s head of retail banking and wealth management for North America.
