Market Extra: Pound jumps after Brexit secretary quits — here’s why analysts see the next few days as critical for U.K.

The pound was rallying Monday even as analysts warned the U.K. government was in danger of collapse after Brexit Secretary David Davis’s resignation.

The British currency may have been drawing buyers thanks to comments from Davis, in which he suggested Prime Minister Theresa May ought to hold on to her job.

Davis, who until late Sunday had been the minister in charge of negotiating Britain’s exit from the European Union, reportedly said he wanted May to stay on.

“I like [May]. She is a good prime minister,” he said in a radio interview.

The pound GBPUSD, +0.3161% was recently changing hands at $1.3335, up from $1.3287 late Friday in New York.
